Voluntary Services and Summer Camps

Four people run happily on grass near the Houses of Parliament on a sunny day.

Would you like to work for understanding, diversity and solidarity and gain experience abroad? With ARSP you can get involved in year long social or historical voluntary services in Germany – together with others as part of an international volunteer group. Or you could take part in a two week long ARSP summer camp: in an international group you work and learn together on a specific project. And every year ARSP volunteers from Germany come to the UK and get involved here.

Why a Voluntary Service with ARSP?

During a voluntary service, for one year, you will be involved, through ARSP, in the work of a partner organisation in Germany – for example you might accompany victims of Nazi persecution, support people with disabilities or you might volunteer at a memorial site. Volunteering is about more than just the work: You get to know the country, its people, the language and history together with an international group of fellow volunteers during seminars. And you make a concrete contribution to peace, diversity and human rights.

A voluntary service lasts 12 months and starts on September 1st of each year. You usually need to apply by January 31st. You and your fellow volunteers prepare for your service in seminars, during the volunteer year you share your experiences and learn more about historical and social issues in workshops and during excursions. A contact person from ARSP supports the volunteers in the country.

Working on a specific project as part of an international group for two weeks in the summer and learning more about the place, its people and history – that’s a summer camp with ARSP.

ARSP offers international encounter projects every summer. Are you in? If so, you can  for two weeks get involved, together with a group of 10 to 20 people from different countries,  in a joint project – for example the care of a Jewish cemetery in Lithuania, the design of a memorial path in the Buchenwald memorial or a scenic reading in Berlin . Excursions and joint activities complete the program.

Painting, gardening, building, archiving or creative workshops might be on the program of a summer camp. With or without previous experience: everyone can get involved – you too. What is important is the willingness to set up a project together. In excursions, research and workshops, you and the group will learn more about the history of the place and the biographies of people – for example in the Buchenwald Memorial about people who were persecuted at this place under National Socialism or about Jewish life in Budapest or queer life in Israel.

Summer camps are short but concrete peace services: In addition to the concrete project and the practical work, you will be a part of many encounters between people from different backgrounds and with different perspectives.

“I am very happy that I work with people with disabilities in my voluntary service, because I would like to do social work in the future as well. (…) People with disabilities were persecuted and killed by the Nazis. The people I work with today may not have experienced this time themselves, but many were and are still exposed to discrimination.
